Life after LVS Oxford

The focus of our education is to improve the outcome possibilities for our pupils. We aim to prepare young people with autism for life in the workplace so that when they leave us they have the skills and knowledge to be able to get a job and sustain employment.

Pupils work toward a variety of recognised GCSEs, Functional skills and Entry Level qualifications including BTEC Levels 1 and 2.

Daniel

Dan was a student at LVS Oxford for seven years, leaving the school at the end of Year 13 in 2022 to join a residential special needs college, Derwen, where he continues to thrive.

“LVS helped me by letting me go to have visits to my college,” says Dan, explaining how LVS Oxford supported his transition from school to college, adding: “They came to visit me at college after I started.”

Dan continues: “I liked my time at LVS and I liked the staff who understood I have autism… I have built on what I learnt at LVS while at college. I am better at communicating what I need and that helps people help me when I struggle.”

Zack

The first person to be awarded an apprenticeship at Blenheim Palace, Zack has used his work placement experience, delivered by LVS Oxford, to gain invaluable life skills, as well as making new and supportive contacts at his new place of employment.

Zack will be on a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Customer Service course, designed to develop customer service skills that will enable him to successfully fulfil customer expectations.

“It’s something I thought I would never be able to do, because you are always having to serve different people,” says Zack, who arrived at LVS Oxford in Year 7 nervous and shy with a high level of anxiety that prevented him from being able to talk to anyone or socialise.

Craig

Craig had not attended school for more than three years when he joined LVS Oxford in Year 10. Four years later, he was Deputy Head boy and enjoying the school’s Sixth Form experience.

After finishing Sixth Form, Craig took up a place at Reading College to study Music Performance & Production, going on to achieve his Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications – passing Level 3 with distinction.

Craig is a great example of how someone who has struggled and, in his mum’s words, been on one “hell of a journey” before joining LVS Oxford, can thrive and triumph. After leaving Reading College, Craig went on to study commercial song writing at WaterBear University in Brighton.

Life after LVS Oxford: Transition Pathways

Our staff support pupils to make decisions about which path to follow when they leave school. Pupils are given access to college prospectuses as well as information on traineeships, supported internships and apprenticeships. We are focused on the individual as we guide pupils choosing their appropriate pathways and courses.

Transition Pathways and Preparing for Adulthood

Our staff work closely with parents, local authorities, and other provision providers to ensure that the next step for our students is supported with the right guidance for a smooth transition to take place. Many of our students go on to further study including A levels and BTEC Level 3s.
